Help Homeowners Receive up to $5,000 in Grants on Home Renovations
Available from June 6, 2011 to March 12, 2012 throughout Canada

The Government of Canada has renewed the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program that encourages homeowners to undertake energy efficient home improvement projects in 2011 to 2012. The Government of Canada has committed $400 million between June 6, 2011 and March 31, 2012, providing homeowners the opportunity to receive up to a maximum of $5,000 in grants. Owners of multiple dwellings and multi-unit residential buildings can receive up to $1 million in grants. The grants will not only motivate homeowners to accelerate their planned future projects, but will also stimulate spending in Canada's housing stock and sector, and increase the demand for labour, building materials and other goods.

What this means to you…

  • Greater and immediate interest from homeowners to undertake renovations in 2011-2012 - about 250,000 Canadian home owners are expected to benefit from the credit
  • Increased demand from do-it-yourselfers and contractors for home building supplies and materials
  • Opportunity for improved sales and business growth in a recovering economy
  • Government support for investment in Canada's housing stock and sector
  • Opportunity to target the 7-million under-insulated attics - a $1.5 billion opportunity

What this means to your customers/homeowners…

  • Opportunities to receive government grants for home improvement projects
  • Increased opportunity for energy-efficient home improvements and reductions on energy costs
  • Acceleration of planned home improvement projects
  • Smart investment in the long-term value of their homes
  • Can insulate the attic, walls or basement with reduced investment due to the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program

What is the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program?

The ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program provides grants to homeowners for energy efficient renovations completed from June 6, 2011 to March 31, 2012. Owners of most houses, four-season recreational properties and low-rise multi-unit residential buildings (MURBs) can register for the eco-ENERGY Retrofit - Homes program.

How do I receive a grant?

1. Homeowners must first register with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and they will receive a registration number.
2. Homeowners must then hire a local service organization licensed by NRCan who will send a certified energy advisor to complete evaluate the dwelling on its pre-retrofit energy efficiency. If the property has already been evaluated after April 2007, another evaluation is not required
3. Purchase and install measures described in the chart and keep the receipts. The more upgrades that are completed, the more money homeowners can receive.
4. Complete a post-retrofit evaluation no later than March 31, 2012. You must show all receipts to your energy advisor during the final evaluation to verify your improvements.

How does the ecoENERGY Retrofit - Homes program work?

Dependent on the type of renovation a homeowner completes, they are eligible to receive a grant from the Government of Canada. The amount received is dependent on the project executed.
